Attrition happened, people stepped away, new people joined.
We were committed to bringing this project to a conclusion in August 2022, so in June, 2021 we all met in person for the first time to share the path ahead.
I invited the new ensemble to float with me in July to give them the same opportunity to slowly and minutely see the space where they would be performing.
These eight new ensemble members practiced the Art of Listening with each other in July and August before joining the rest of the band and dancers on floating stages in August. The band was together in the mornings, the dancers in the afternoon in groups no larger than fifteen, all working on new musical and movement ideas that we wanted to try out before folding them into the structure of the whole piece. It was a delightful time.
In the fall, the full performing ensemble of thirty met outside in a dirt parking lot at the Capital City Grange to train together. Now we head inside in small groups to work on the scenes, preparing for performance in August 2022.
Our production core line-up involves: 30 performers, 8 collaborating artists, 7 technical team members, 5 carpenters, 3 legal and insurance advisors, 2 presenting partners, 36 volunteers, 5 fundraising team members, 3 media team members, numerous donors, a producer, a quarry owner, and the quarry itself.
Meanwhile, the quarry waits.
