The Quarry Project Update
The image above was taken at Jay Southgate’s large granite table in 2020 when the TABLE dancers improvised together, enjoying the chance to be moving together again.
This image is from Dear Pina (2012). My partner Dave crafted this table (16’ long) to be strong enough for someone to jump up onto it. In the Quarry Project, it is used even more energetically.
In The Quarry Project, this is the only set element that is not white and is in its useful condition. All the others are but a shadow of their former selves.
In early April, we will gather inside and create again this scene which, in the making, has generated lots of laughter - much needed medicine these days.
Here is Leslie’s writings on the table:
A piece of furniture with a flat top providing a level surface on which objects may be placed, and that can be used for such purposes as eating, writing, working, or playing games.
We sit at tables in thoughtful isolation, in social interaction and with physical exertion. The routine of sitting at a table among others may be the basis for creating or maintaining a tradition. Conduct learned as children guide us as we sit among others. As in all social circumstances, one never knows what might unfold. Here, in the quarry, the table is the focal point for a gathering. Table dancers use physical language that bubbles up from their early experiences at the family table.
But sometimes a table is just a table, a surface upon which to interact, an obstacle, a tool, a partner in the dance thus leaving openings for interpretation, for the unexpected, for more than the usual ways of relating to a table.
Here is a short clip of the Table dancers in 2019.
Please consider joining us at the table with your support. We have a little over $23,000 to raise and your donation makes a real difference, going directly to supporting the artists like the seven TABLE women. You can send a check to Cradle to Grave Arts, Inc at PO Box 8, Chelsea, VT 05038, or make a donation online. All donations are tax-deductible.
Until next month,
Hannah & Leslie
