The Quarry Project Update

For the next couple of months, I am getting help with this newsletter from my collaborative partner Leslie Anderson whose artistry you see in the set, costume and film elements of this project. Here are her words about the CHAIRS.

Like the other elements in this piece, the chair is an iconic image that carries the weight of memory and emotion unique to each of us. From the historic power of the throne to the sense of belonging at the kitchen table, the chair in all its variations throughout recorded time remains essentially the same.

We chose to paint these chairs and other set elements starkly white to contrast with and stand out from the massive rock faces, the deep fluid carpet of water and the brilliant flowing red dresses of the dancers. The most functional part, the seat, is removed leaving only the idea behind. The chair becomes sculptural, challenging the dancer to find new relationships to such a common item.
Here is a short clip of Alana in 2019 with her chair.

Even though what we see and what we take from this scene is a result of our own individual lives, from the games we played as children to the occurrences of today, all of it in one way or another is a shared experience.

Please consider being part of the bedrock of support. Your donation makes a real difference and goes directly to supporting the artists like the CHAIR women. You can send a check to Cradle to Grave Arts, Inc at P.O. Box 8, Chelsea, VT 05038 or make a donation online. All donations are tax-deductible.

Until next month,
Hannah & Leslie
