The Quarry Project Update

As I listen to Emily’s narrative and watch the footage taken on Tuesday the 16th, I am once again deeply moved to have been part of this project, to experience the magic of the space, the way that art can thin the membrane between the world we know and the worlds we don’t, thus expanding our imagination and understanding.

Rose, a dancer in the Table scene, sent me a letter telling me what the ensemble does just before they become visible in the Wells Lamson; one of them reads the poem at the end of the narration, Hokusai says by Roger Keyes, which places them firmly in the present moment and connects them to you, the audience, hearing the poem.

This day of the 16th was so still, pregnant with change. The colors of the robes were Barre grey granite, just what Leslie had been working towards, dipping and dyeing over and over. There were multiple moments of stillness throughout, moments of silence that brought us all closer to the quarry, the water, the rock, the plants, the birds, and the shifting, changing reflections of the bodies on the stages.

On this day, as we were nearing the end of the piece, the sky opened up with a gentle rain. The ensemble danced, sang and played music throughout, and the audience stayed, leaning in. Everyone was filled with amazement and gratitude for the care, passion, attention, courage, and strength by all involved.

For those of you who were able to sit in the audience to see The Quarry Project, thank you for your interest in this form of art. If you want to write to me about what you saw and felt, I would be honored to read it and paste it into my book that is slowly filling up with the writing from others in response to what was created.

By September, we will have The Quarry Project books, postcards and notecards available to order online. In the early winter, we will have the premier of the film. Meanwhile, we are beginning the process of clearing out of the site. Next month, we will put out the call to anyone interested in parts and pieces, some we will sell, others give away to a new and appreciative home.

Until September,
