The Quarry Project Update

For whatever the reason, I have been thinking about the above choreographic concept we experimented with during the summer of 2021 when we first came together in the quarry after our COVID hiatus. Above, from left to right is Bridget, Grace, Willow, and Nicole. At one of the recent screenings, we were asked about the way we work and how many sketches went onto the shelf.  We agreed it was a series of large bookcases that housed all the discarded inclinations, including the circling and clapping scene above.  Such is the creative process.

Training in improvisation, we are encouraged to let go of an idea or pathway when it is no longer juicy, and look for the next inspiration. It is so easy to do in the studio and so hard to implement in day-to-day life where our long-held beliefs are entrenched habits.

At the screenings of Lukas’s film, I have had opportunities to notice my habits and interrupt their hold. Such was the case at the recent AVA Gallery in Lebanon, NH when Ellen, MC and I were asked if The Quarry Project was a piece about COVID. I immediately said NO, but then I paused. Indeed, this piece was not about COVID but certainly shaped by it. We three then spoke about all the ways in which the pandemic changed the project and the ensemble; we paused, shelved the plans, gathered new ideas, sought ways to deepen our connection as humans, and waited.
