The Quarry Project Update
This month I have been out on the quarry with the new ensemble members, giving them a chance to slowly explore their “home” before we begin our final experiments in August. Over the past five summers that I have floated solo or with another person, I am always hearing or seeing something new. This photo taken by Claire is a prime example – the beat-up working stage, the tiny glimpse of her hand, the reflections of her, the trees, the sky, the metal debris, the submerged ladder, the wall all seen through the mirror of the deep water. Thursday, Linda Bassick brought her trombone and I got to hear it in the quarry, echoing off the surfaces. And yesterday, Grace spotted a turtle. The first I have seen in the quarry. Splendid and magical, all of it.
We are fully aware of the uniqueness of this opportunity and often wish we could share this place with more people. the daily discoveries in this "archeological" place, this void that offers solace and quiet. Since that is not possible, we are embodying this most unusual and calming experience, bringing it into our interactions and then onto the performance stages in 2022.
Next month, when we are in the quarry on a few stages, the dancers will be in their costumes. Leslie Anderson, with Tai Nixa Peterson’s assistance has been creating this glorious, colorful, wearable art which we will feature in August’s newsletter.
