The Massive by Catherine Crawley

The Quarry Project Update
July 20, 2020

Since mid-June, I have been in the quarry on the working stage floating about with one or two people from the ensemble and our community of supporters. As of this writing, there have been 20 floats with another dozen before we haul out the stage and leave the site for the year.

Each person has come away from their two hours with a sense of awe for the space and a deeper appreciation for the piece. Joining me last week was Karen Mittelman, director of the Vermont Arts Council and Catherine Crawley, their communications director. The photographs in this newsletter were taken by Catherine as we crept around the edges.

Along with discussions about the quarry, the stories I’ve heard, the geology of its past, and the ecology of its present, we have had extended and welcome exchanges on how we are coping, what we are learning, and what our responsibilities are in this pivotal moment in history.

This month, the ensemble is focusing on their scenes, playing with the structure, re-charging their relationships and discovering what is new. The women in the CHAIRS scene chose to work on their improvisation skills as a trio in a site near the Montpelier bike path. From that, Alana put together a short film using sonic fragments of the QP band compositions. https://vimeo.com/439010777

Speaking of film, we are in the beginning of creating the 2020 Quarry Project film. Over the next months, we will share with you little bits and pieces as Lukas Huffman shapes the images that express the suspended state of The Quarry Project and its ensemble.

May your summer be safe and thoughtful with flashes of beauty balancing the rigorous challenges facing all of us.
